The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance

This is a splendid book by internationally renowned potter Edmund de Waal, who sought out the history of a large collection of netsuke that he inherited (hence the title of the book). He allotted several months to this project and it took several years. It's a fascinating story that includes some of the major European banking families and the devastation of their empire during World War II.

So how is it in any way connected to the Quimper Club meeting in Nice??

One of the excursions at the meeting is a visit to the villa of BĂ©atrice Ephrussi de Rothschild at Cap Ferrat (a wonderful villa with fabulous gardens). Edmund de Waal is a member of the Ephrussi family ...

The book is well-written and is a very good read!

  1. Judy, thanks for getting the new blog off the ground with this excellent book recommendation. I'm sure many of our members who plan on attending the annual meeting in France will be interested in this story.

  4. Oh yes, I have been recommending this book for a year or so! It is especially interesting for artists and architects as it is very descriptive of places and art work.

  5. I LOVED it! The author has the most wonderful vocabulary I have encountered in a very long time, and his research was so deep and well done..I am so eager to see this estate, and I was delighted to learn that "Kerylos" one of my all-time-favorite places was also the residence of one of his Ephrussi relatives!

  6. I LOVED this book! It is reflected, in some ways, in the current film, The Lady in Gold.
